Social Media for Government: The City of Las Vegas

I think Las Vegas is constantly reinventing itself it’s constantly evolving and when residents can have that connection to their past they have a tendency to have more ownership and pride in their community. I think in today’s world people don’t expect the government to be listening I think people feel very disenfranchised with the political process and so it’s never more important than ever here at the local level to make people feel engaged and let them know that their voice is being heard. The whole world knows about Vegas as an idea but we want to speak you know government to citizen Government is a necessary part of helping communities grow we’re going to do things right for the future for our residents and businesses and for overall quality of life. From being a leader in sustainability to embracing education reform in preserving Las Vegas’s unique history and bringing about new businesses in our downtown social media is giving us the tools to make sure everyone knows all of the amazing things that are happening in the city of Las Vegas. As a local business it feels really good to see the city of Las Vegas you know retweet us on twitter with the following like that it makes me feel really good and proud as a business owner. When people come to us about what the city is doing for them as it relates to their LGBTQ identity it’s great for the city to be as forward thinking because we can say like hey the city is actually doing these things. Anything going on pretty much in the community every week we can Tweet out or we can Facebook post 5 10 different stories goes all of our Facebook friends all of our Twitter followers and it gets a lot of information out there quickly. Public wants to know what’s going on and they should they should know what’s going on Last year we engaged with 380,000 unique people on Facebook and Twitter that’s more than half of the city’s population which is just over 600,000. It’s incredibly important to give your staff the tools that they need to be able to do their job to make sure that they’re staying on top of the vast amount of conversation that’s happening on social media. It’s really about what are our constituents on what are our visitors on and how can we connect with them so as the world of social media develops the communication strategy for the city is going to develop right along with it.
